Time Calculator: Add & Subtract Time Instantly

Whether you’re calculating how long a project took, figuring out your total work hours for payroll, adding up video durations, or working out elapsed time between events — manual time arithmetic is error-prone and tedious. This free time calculator handles the mathematics instantly: enter any combination of days, hours, minutes, and seconds in both fields, choose add or subtract, and get an accurate normalised result with total equivalents in hours, minutes, seconds, and work days.

Quick examples: 2h 30m + 1h 45m = 4h 15m · 10h 15m − 3h 20m = 6h 55m · 1h 90m = 2h 30m (auto-normalised) · 0d 25h = 1d 1h (auto-normalised)

How Time Addition Works

Adding time follows the same principle as standard arithmetic but with non-decimal bases: seconds use base-60, minutes use base-60, and hours use base-24. When a sum exceeds the base, the excess carries over to the next unit:

UnitBase (carries over at)ExampleNormalised result
Seconds6045s + 30s = 75s1m 15s
Minutes6045m + 25m = 70m1h 10m
Hours2418h + 9h = 27h1d 3h

Real-Life Uses of Time Calculators

💼

Payroll & work hours

Add up daily work hours across a week to calculate total billable time. Subtract lunch breaks and non-billable periods. Convert to decimal hours for payroll processing — e.g. 37h 30m = 37.5 hours.

🎬

Media & content planning

Add video clip durations to plan playlists or calculate total runtime. Podcast editors use time calculators to track segment lengths. Broadcasters schedule content by adding durations to find total airtime.

✈️

Travel & scheduling

Calculate total travel time by adding flight duration, layovers, and transit times. Subtract time zone differences from departure times. Plan itineraries by adding activity durations to arrival times.

🏃

Sports & fitness

Track total training time across multiple sessions. Compare personal best times by subtracting them. Calculate average pace from total distance and total elapsed time across a training block.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I add time values?
Enter the days, hours, minutes, and seconds for each time value in the two input groups, select “Add Time” mode, and click Calculate. The calculator automatically normalises the result — so 90 minutes becomes 1 hour 30 minutes, and 25 hours becomes 1 day 1 hour. Blank fields default to zero. The result appears instantly in both decomposed form (days/hours/minutes/seconds) and as total equivalents.
Can I leave fields blank?
Yes — any blank field is automatically treated as zero. You don’t need to fill in all four fields for each time value. If you only need hours and minutes, just enter those two fields and leave days and seconds blank. This makes the calculator faster to use for common scenarios like adding hours and minutes for work time tracking.
How does time normalisation work?
Normalisation is the automatic carry-over process that converts excess values into larger units. The calculator converts everything to total seconds first, then works upward: 60 seconds → 1 minute, 60 minutes → 1 hour, 24 hours → 1 day. This means you can enter any values you like — even 300 minutes or 7200 seconds — and the result will be correctly expressed in the most readable form. You can also see the total hours, minutes, and seconds equivalents in the results dashboard.
What happens with negative time results?
When subtracting and the second time value is larger than the first, the result is negative. The calculator displays this clearly with a minus sign and shows the absolute difference. The unit cards and total equivalents show the magnitude of the difference. This is useful for finding how much time a task overran a planned duration, or how much buffer time remains.
How do I calculate total work hours?
Enter your start and end times as time values and subtract. For example, if you worked from 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM, enter 9 hours for Time A and 17 hours 30 minutes for Time B in subtract mode — wait, flip them: Time A = 17h 30m, Time B = 9h, result = 8h 30m. For multiple days, add each day’s hours together using Add mode. The calculator shows the result in decimal hours (e.g. 8.5 hours) in the “Total hours” field, which is the format most payroll systems require.
How are work days calculated?
The “Work days” equivalent uses an 8-hour standard working day (8 × 3,600 = 28,800 seconds per work day). So 40 hours = 5 work days, 12 hours = 1.5 work days, etc. This is a reference metric — if your organisation uses a different work-day length (7 hours, 7.5 hours, etc.), simply divide the “Total hours” result by your actual hours-per-day to get your work-day equivalent.
Can I use this for payroll calculations?
Yes — this is one of the most common use cases. Add up all hours worked across the pay period using multiple Add calculations, then check the “Total hours” output (shown in decimal form). Multiply by your hourly rate for gross pay. For overtime, calculate regular hours and overtime hours separately. Note that this calculator provides arithmetic assistance — for official payroll records, verify results and comply with your local employment and payroll regulations.
