Square Footage Calculator: Calculate Room & Floor Area Instantly
Whether you’re planning a flooring installation, estimating paint for a renovation, calculating the size of a property for a real estate listing, or figuring out how many tiles you need for a bathroom — accurate square footage calculations are the foundation of every home improvement project. This free square footage calculator supports 5 room shapes, multi-room totals, waste percentage allowances, and instant material and cost estimates.
📐 Area formulas:
Rectangle/Square: Area = Length × Width · Triangle: Area = ½ × Base × Height
Circle: Area = π × r² · L-Shape: Area = Rectangle A + Rectangle B
1 sq ft = 0.0929 m² · 1 m² = 10.764 sq ft

Flooring and Material Estimation
🪵
Hardwood & laminate flooring
Standard flooring boxes cover approximately 20–25 sq ft each. Always add 10% waste for straight-lay installation and 15% for diagonal or herringbone patterns. For large rooms with many cuts (around fireplaces, doorways), 15% is safer. Purchase complete boxes — you can’t buy partial boxes, so round up.
🔲
Tile installation
12×12 inch tiles = 1 sq ft each (easy to calculate). For larger tiles (24×24) or smaller mosaic tiles, calculate the number differently. Add 10% waste for straight-lay tile and 15%+ for diagonal patterns. Grout joint width slightly reduces coverage — 1/16 to 1/8 inch joints are standard.
🎨
Paint coverage
One gallon of paint typically covers 350–400 sq ft with one coat on smooth walls. Textured walls, dark colours, or porous surfaces may require 2 coats, halving coverage to 175–200 sq ft/gallon. The calculator estimates walls as approximately the room’s floor area — for accurate wall paint estimates, calculate wall areas separately (height × perimeter).
🏠
Real estate measurements
Real estate square footage typically measures finished, heated living space. This excludes garages, unfinished basements, and covered porches in most jurisdictions. Measurement standards vary — always check local real estate board guidelines. For listing purposes, measurements should be verified with a professional.
For a rectangular room: multiply the length by the width in the same unit. Example: a 12 ft × 10 ft room = 120 sq ft. For measurements in inches, convert to feet first by dividing by 12 (144 inches = 12 feet). For metres, multiply by 10.764 to convert to sq ft. Use this calculator to handle any unit conversion automatically — just enter your dimensions and select the unit.
How much flooring waste should I add?
Standard recommendation: add 10% for straight-lay installation, 15% for diagonal or offset patterns, and 20% for herringbone or complex patterns. This accounts for cuts at walls, around obstacles, and unusable offcuts. For rooms with many doorways, alcoves, or irregular features, lean toward 15%. The waste percentage option in the calculator adjusts your material order quantity automatically.
Can I calculate multiple rooms at once?
Yes — use the “Add Room” button after measuring each room. The calculator maintains a running list of all rooms with individual areas, then totals them for the combined sq ft. This is ideal for whole-home flooring projects, multi-room renovation budgets, and real estate measurement totals. Each room can have a different shape (rectangle, triangle, circle, L-shape) and they all add together correctly.
How do I convert square metres to square feet?
Multiply square metres by 10.7639 to get square feet. Example: 50 m² × 10.7639 = 538.2 sq ft. Or divide sq ft by 10.7639 to get m². This calculator shows both sq ft and m² results simultaneously for every calculation. You can also enter measurements in metres and the calculator converts everything automatically.
Why is square footage important in real estate?
Square footage is the primary metric for comparing property values. Price per square foot ($/sq ft) allows direct comparison between properties of different sizes. In most markets, larger homes command higher total prices but lower $/sq ft due to economies of scale. Buyers use sq ft to assess whether a property is well-priced relative to comparable sales (comps). It also determines property tax assessments in many jurisdictions.
How do I calculate an L-shaped room?
Divide the L-shape into two rectangles (two ways to divide work — pick the more obvious split). Measure each rectangle’s length and width separately, calculate each area, then add them together. Example: an L-shaped room splits into a 14×10 ft rectangle (140 sq ft) and an 8×6 ft rectangle (48 sq ft) = 188 sq ft total. Use the “L-Shape” option in this calculator — enter both rectangle dimensions and the total is calculated automatically.
